Sustainable Manufacturing is Responsible Innovation

October 20, 2022

The history of manufacturing is a story where growth followed challenges. COVID-19 proved to be a challenge that not only impacted production but changed manufacturing culture at its core.

Sustainability has taken center stage in the ever-evolving manufacturing and hotel renovation landscapes. One of the most significant drivers of this shift is the emergence of consumer demand for companies to re-evaluate their corporate social responsibility (CSR) roles. Manufacturers are making this possible by shifting their manufacturing strategies to transition into the world of sustainability.

Sustainability: the future of customer retention

People who want to put their money where their values lie are the new consumers. Quality is no longer enough to win their favor; they look for products and environments aligned with their own ethics and moral code.

The restaurant industry is experiencing increased demand from customers wishing to engage in thoughtfully designed spaces. Remote workers are looking for convenient, tech-savvy locations to conduct business, and restaurants are providing that space. However, customers wanting to reconnect through dining out or looking for a refreshing work environment seek out restaurant brands that contribute to sustainability.

Research shows consumers care about companies that support causes that matter to them. A survey carried out on behalf of the Sustainable Restaurant Association revealed that over 80% of respondents said sustainability was a deciding factor when choosing where to eat.

How can manufacturing be more sustainable?

Sustainability in manufacturing is complex but can be categorized into three main areas – nearshoring, automation, and materials.

Manufacturers continue to experience longer lead times between product manufacturing and delivery to customers. The solution industry leaders are exploring is finding local or near-shore manufacturers to control costs and lead times.

A recent nearshoring study found that 70% of U.S. companies plan to move manufacturing closer to their home bases. Not only does nearshoring reduce logistical liability, but it’s also more sustainable with a reduction in freight, fuel, and overall carbon consumption. Manufacturers also reduce waste and lower costs by providing greater supply chain visibility

Manufacturing automation is another angle to take to enhance sustainable manufacturing practices. Products or components built with automation produce less waste, can be built faster, and are often more cost-effective. Of course, automation isn’t always an option for companies that prioritize hand-crafted materials or require steps that can’t be done by machinery. In this case, evaluating the manufacturing process or techniques can be beneficial. Often steps can be taken to reduce waste and save time without sacrificing the quality of the product.

Materials can also be sustainable. Selecting recycled materials, using more eco-friendly packaging, or using better quality materials that will have a longer life all contribute to sustainable manufacturing. The good news is that many interior materials already being used, like laminates, porcelain tiles, and powder-coated materials, are more sustainable than other options.

Optimization of production processes and techniques is not merely a passing trend; it’s the future of responsible manufacturing. Now is the time for manufacturers to “reset” what value means to consumers. By taking this seriously, brands resonate with consumers and provide an experience that is authentic and memorable.
